Write-up of how this replica came about.
Carousel roosters were carved only by Dentzel and Herschell-Spillman in America. A Dentzel carousel rooster was the world record holder in public auction sale price for at $148,000 US$ until “Bruno” the PTC Saint Bernard overtook the spot at $174,000 US$. In England, Roosters, or Cockerels were hugely popular.
My wife and myself learned Carousel Animal Carving at Carousel Carving School “Horsin Around’ in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, USA from master carver & master teacher Mr.Frank ‘Bud’ Ellis more than 2 decades ago.
We both worked on the The Coolidge Park carousel in Chattanooga, Tennessee over a few weeks over 2 years timeframe, several years ago. At that time my wife was able to carve and finish the horse of her dreams which she remembered from her childhood. At that time I was intrigued with the Dentzel roosters history and wanted to carve a replica however work hours did not allow me to commit the time for carving until after my retirement December 2008. We previously had Mr. Bud Ellis cut, glue and roughed out the rooster in basswood, same as the old master carousel carvers, however work on it ceased until my retirement. After the pandemic we have now finished this Dentzel Rooster. My goal was to carve and finish it with no intension of keeping it after completion. We do have progression pictures for this rooster included.
